Almond is a fruit and flowering plant. It is a medium-sized shrub or tree, depending on the variety. During the flowering period, it bears a large number of white, pink or cream colored flowers. They are replaced by fruits that are used as food, cosmetics or in other industries.
During flowering, the tree emits a pleasant fragrance and looks very pretty. Not surprisingly, special ornamental varieties of it have been bred. They have practically no health or industrial benefits, but are actively used in landscaping.
Flowers usually appear from April to July. The timing of their appearance depends on the breed of plant or region in which it grows. Flowering is followed by fruit. Ornamental trees can also bear fruit. But their nuts are of little or no value.
The flowers have five petals and are symmetrical. They usually emerge somewhat before the leaves. Different varieties of almond tree may have different flowering characteristics.
Peculiarities of flowering of different varieties
Different varieties of almonds bloom in different ways. Their flowering features are expressed in the hue of the flowers, the timing of their appearance, and more.
Common Almond
The best known and most common type of this plant. It usually blooms in March or April. But sometimes its earlier flowering is noted.
The plant has large flowers. They grow singly. Their coloring is usually white or light pink. After flowering, fruits are formed. They can be sweet or bitter. Sweet varieties are usually grown as a rule.
Terry
This variety can be either cultivated or wild. It is characterized by paired flowers of increased lushness. They are terry-type. Their color can be light or dark pink or even crimson. The beginning of flowering is characteristic of the first few days of May. It can last up to about two months.
Three-blade
Blossoms usually from April to May. The variety is considered unpretentious. It is not afraid of serious temperature fluctuations. The tree feels great in cold weather as well as in heat or drought. It produces pink or light pink flowers which fall off within 14 days.
This variety is generally used for decorative purposes. It is often planted in botanical gardens. It is rarely grown for other purposes.
Steppe
This variety can sometimes also be called dwarf, low, or bobwhite. This plant is considered poisonous. It usually blooms in April. The buds have a bright pink hue. Flowers can grow singly or in small groups. They smell tart and bitter.
This low-growing shrub is of steppe origin. It tolerates cold and lack of water very well, but needs light. Nowadays, the variety is most often grown solely for decorative purposes. But it is also sometimes used for the preparation of some medicines. It is not suitable for food.
Other varieties of almonds may have their own characteristics of flowering. But the main species of the plant, the best known in our country, are distinguished by the above characteristics of this process.
